The Mission
The purpose of Sastra Dana is to enable you to participate directly in the missionary activities of distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books by sponsoring them. Our goal is to expose as many people as possible to the spiritual information given in Srila Prabhupada’s books.
How Do We Distribute the Books?
By placing donated books in locations where they will be properly kept and read, such as libraries, schools, motels, hotels, hospital waiting rooms, government offices, dentists‘ offices, coffee shops, etc.
How Can You Participate?
By sponsoring the books, by coming up with creative ideas for getting donations or for distributing books, by personally distributing the sponsored books, by telling others about the program, etc.
What are the Benefits of Sastra Dana?
Everyone benefits! The people in general benefit by getting a chance to read about Krishna, and you directly participate in the preaching mission of Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Srila Prabhupada. Your help increases book distribution, which is the highest welfare work for all humanity.
QUOTATIONS
Srila Prabhupada’s comments on Sastra dana (Quotes from Srila Prabhupada on Sastra dana)
Srila Prabhupada: „This, our book distribution is the most important task in our society. Therefore I am giving so much stress and I am working so hard on this. Because this is my life and soul according to the order of my Guru Maharaja. And by his grace it is to some extent successful. And I took it seriously. I take it seriously still now. That is my life and soul.“
(Room Conversation, Mumbay, 31.12.1976.)
SRILA PRABHUPADA ON FREE BOOKS
Amogha: „….So they would collect much laxmi, then they would go out and give away books to the prisons and jails and hospitals. Cases of books. They put them in the libraries too. They agreed; otherwise they didn’t get. They would ask them if they would use it, and they said yes. So in three days they distributed very, very many books.“
Prabhupada: „Free?“
Amogha: „Yes. First they collected the money elsewhere, then they gave it away to the hospitals and prisons. One boy he collected in one day, he won the contest, he collected seven hundred and fifty dollars in one day. Australian dollars. That’s almost one thousand U.S. dollars. I don’t remember how many books, very, very many books he gave away also. Big books, hardbound books, Krsna books, Srimad-Bhagavatam.“
Prabhupada: „So, you are trying to serve Krsna very nicely. That is very good. These rascals are in ignorance and you are trying to enlighten them. Very good service. (break) After reading a book does anybody come and ask questions? Do they receive regularly letters and enquiries?“
Amogha: „Yes. here they do. I answer many of the letters when they come…“
(Morning walk, Perth, 09.05.1975.)
Prabhupada: „No, no, even giving them away, what is the wrong?“
Madhudvisa: „Well, You said we should not give the books away. You said we should sell these books.“
Prabhupada: (chuckles) „No, no, he has purchased. He has purchased. Then if You purchase from me and if you give free to others, so what is my loss?“
Madhudvisa: „No, there is no loss.“
Siddha-svarupa: „I’m not giving away his books.“
Prabhupada: „No, no, even if he gives away, this is not a fault, You see? Suppose there are… in South Africa many Indians are purchasing our books and giving to the library. So somebody will read it. So that is not a fault. If I purchase from you and give it, distribute it free to somebody else, that is not wrong thing.“
(Morning walk, Mayapur, 08. 03.1976.)
„The balance books will be ready for dispatch by the 20th of July 1970. I have decided to send you 2 500 copies for sale. And also I wish to send some free copies to George Harrison for distribution amongst his intimate friends as he likes. So let me know by return post how many copies will satisfie him. I know that he has many friends, but I will be ready to supply him free copies not exceeding one hundred. So please reply this point immediately.“
(Letter, 19.06.1970.)
„But if your newly founded institution cooperates with me, it will be a great success. So far donation to this foundation, naturally I shall be inclined to donate in kind. I have already printed my following books, Bagavad-gita as it is, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Easy Journey to Other Planets, Teachings of Lord Caitanya, and so on, as well as our Back to Godhead magazine. And I shall be glad to donate free as many copies your fondation may require from me.“
(Letter, 05.05.72.)
